With COVID upsetting the hospitality sector in the urban areas completely, interest in rural tourism has increased. This development could help in employment generation at the grassroots as well as lessen some of the unfavorable effect on the sector.
If the concept of rural tourism is taken in the right direction, could sustain the culture of the grass root village communities while also generating facilities for income for the people associated with it. As per the Union Ministry of Tourism, the prime beneficiaries are “local people who are trained professionally to provide a complete package to rural tourists.” To work as guides, drivers, cooks and even housekeeping and hospitality, locals can be trained.
As rural tourism is not a magic solution that would save the tourism sector or local communities from their current difficulties, it does provide a unique and participatory development model which has a chance to set up long-lasting benefits for the community. A ‘flower model’ looks to develop tourism in the categories like, Homestay, Agritourism, Community-based Tourism and Village Tourism. Freshers and those who are in the tourism sector can look at these options to stay afloat.
