The Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture Alexis Tam said that among the government’s strategies for stimulating the economy is to attract “better tourists” to the territory, citing Europeans as an example.

“Our policy is always to attract better tourists to Macau, such as European, Portuguese, Spanish and English tourists coming to appreciate our culture between Portugal and China,” Tam said on the fringes of the Forum International of Gastronomy.

“We have to attract better tourists who come to Macau to appreciate our world heritage, our culture and gastronomy, come to consume, to stimulate the economy,” said Tam.
Tam ruled out the possibility of creating an additional limit on the entry of tourists, as this territory has witnessed about 35 million visitors last year.

“There is already control of individual tourists from Mainland China, there are only 49 Chinese cities that can come to Macau more easily […] Macau is not open to all Chinese cities,” Tam said.

The forum assembles the largest ever participation of the Network of Creative Cities of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in Gastronomy.

Over the weekend, a forum initiative was held, with demonstrations by more than 30 international chefs representing more than 20 UNESCO Creative Cities.

In addition to the SAR, cities in the interior of China, South Korea, Japan, Thailand, Turkey, Spain, Norway, Sweden, Italy, Colombia, Mexico, Brazil, Panama and the United States were also represented in the event.

The director of the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO), Helena de Senna Fernandes, said that this type of initiative aims to “attract more tourists to stay longer in Macau, not only in casinos,” with a bet “in culture, in gastronomic legacy.”

UNESCO’s senior cultural policy program specialist, Denise Bax, also stressed that the “forum provides a powerful demonstration of the central role of culture for sustainable development”.

First held in 2016, the International Forum of Gastronomy aims to be ‘an important platform for the exchange and exploration of cooperation initiatives between Macau, other Creative Cities of Gastronomy, professionals and academics of the field’.
