An international tourism complex-cum-world class aquarium project, which is the first of its kind in India, would come up at Mumbai’s Worli.

The mega-project is spread across an area of 14.55 acres at the Worli Dairy Complex near the Rajiv Gandhi BandraWorli Sea Link, and would cost around Rs. 1,000 crore. The project is expected to be finished by December 2023.

Kick starting the project, the Maharashtra government has issued an official notification for transferring the major sea-facing chunk of land, which is currently under the state Dairy Development Department to the Revenue Department and thereafter to the Urban Development Department.

The new tourism-cum-aquarium complex is slated to become one of the major show-piece initiatives of the MahaVikasAghadi with Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and Deputy Chief Minister AjitPawar taking keen interest for promoting domestic and international visitors to Maharashtra.

At the moment, Mumbai has the well-known D. B. Taraporevala Aquarium at Marine Drive, which showcases different types of marine life from India and the world, attracting over 400,000 visitors annually. It is the oldest aquarium in Indiawith more than 2,000 fishes from 400 species of seawater or fresh-water creatures.
