Tunisia’s recent decision to allow visa-free entry for Iranian travelers marks a significant milestone in the bilateral tourism relationship between the two countries. In 2018, Iran’s expenditure on outbound tourism reached an impressive 8.695 billion U.S. dollars, up from 632 million in 1999, reflecting an average annual growth rate of 28.87%. A 2023 GlobalData report highlighted that the most popular destinations for Iranian travelers include Turkey, the UAE, Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Georgia, with projections indicating a 20% increase in international departures from Iran in 2023.

Iran’s tourism ministry reported 3.35 million tourist arrivals in the first half of the current Iranian calendar year, starting March 21, representing a 38% increase from the previous year. However, outbound travel slightly declined, with 1,759,749 Iranians traveling abroad in the first quarter, a 6.5% decrease from 1,882,414 in the same period last year.

Economic and Tourism Projections

Economic forecasts predict a steady increase in Iran’s gross domestic product (GDP) from 2024 to 2029, with an expected rise of 112.1 billion U.S. dollars, equating to a 24.15% growth. This trajectory suggests that by 2029, Iran’s GDP will reach a new peak of 576.24 billion U.S. dollars, continuing a trend of nine consecutive years of economic expansion.
