Ireland bags best travel destination award for ninth year in a row

A leading US travel publication has declared Ireland as the best travel destination in Europe for the ninth year in a row. Ireland has won the award in the Best Destination in Europe category beating tough competitors like Italy, France, Greece, Spain and Croatia.

The award was received by Tourism Ireland at the 20th annual Travel Weekly Readers’ Choice Awards held in New York in the American Museum of Natural History.

The awards represent what Travel Weekly’s audience consider the best of the best in 82 categories.
An open ballot phase of voting took place in the summer and the top vote recipients were identified, before a second round was held in the autumn.

Delighted at bagging the honour, Alison Metcalfe, Tourism Ireland’s head of North America said, “Travellers nowadays have tremendous choice, which makes it more important than ever for us to ensure Ireland stands out from other destinations – so this award is really good news, as we prepare to kick off another extensive and targeted promotional drive in 2023.”

In 2019, 1.7million US tourists visited Ireland generating €1.6billion for the economy.
