Italy’s Mount Etna, renowned as one of the world’s most active volcanoes, recently experienced a significant eruption, leading to the suspension of flights to Catania, the largest city in eastern Sicily. Catania faced substantial ashfall following Sunday’s eruption, resulting in the closure of the city’s airport.

Addressing the situation via social media, the airport issued a statement saying, “Flight operations remain suspended until tomorrow (Monday) morning at 9 a.m. or in any case until safety conditions are restored. Go to the airport only if the flight schedule is confirmed. Info with airlines.”

Catania’s airport periodically pauses its activities due to the almost constant state of volcanic activity at Mount Etna, which is also one of Europe’s tallest active volcanoes. Experts are uncertain about the duration of this eruption, as the previous one in early 2021 lasted for several weeks.

The safety of residents and travelers is of utmost importance during such occurrences. Authorities and airlines will closely monitor the situation and provide updates on when it will be safe to resume flight operations. Travelers are advised to stay informed about their flight schedules through direct communication with the airlines and to exercise caution when planning their journeys to or from Catania.

Mount Etna’s eruptions serve as a reminder of the powerful natural forces at work and the need for preparedness and vigilance in areas prone to volcanic activity.
