FIT dominates outbound of Hong Kong, World’s 10th largest market by total spending! For examples, FIT account for some 80% of the 1.8 million Hong Kong’s outbound to Japan in 2016, and chosen by 87% of the nearly 90,000 visitors in two public days of ITE Hong Kong 2017, the city’s only travel fair!
In fact, ITE has also two trade days, which require registration for admission and drew 12000 regional buyers and visitors in 2017.
Though package tours still dominates its outbound market, FIT is getting popularity too in China! It accounted for, in 2016, 43% of the 1.6 million Chinese travelers visiting France and some 70% of mainland China’s outbound to Hong Kong! What’s more, 80% of China’s FIT to Hong Kong during Spring Festival Golden Week in 2017 stayed in 4-star or 5-star hotels there!
FIT & Private Tour Group
FIT, particularly in Hong Kong, can sometimes mean private tour group of friends, several families and / or travelers with similar interest traveling together!
One such example is Astronomy Photography, with a popular photographer maintaining a blog and his fans the potential travelers. That can mean business for travel agents! In fact, 15% of ITE public visitors interest in booking directly with ground operator at destination.
Dealing directly with Hong Kong FIT?
Relatively, dealing directly with Hong Kong FIT can be easy even for overseas sellers! Citizens can visit over 150 destinations without visa, and there are many travel veterans! English, an official language, is being widely spoken and many can handle online booking or payment etc.
Dealing directly with services providers is even preferred by FIT, revealed in ITE 2017 public visitor survey! When asked about how they book FIT travel products, 64% by online directly with suppliers like airline and hotel, much higher than the 48% through OTA and the 39% through agents!
The survey found ITE public visitors are well educated with 45% having university education and another 24% post-secondary; and travel frequently as 12% had six or more holidays and 44% three to five in past year! That makes it far much easier communicating and serving them!
Tapping Hong Kong Affluent FIT in ITE Public / FIT Days
In-depth and theme travels are popular with Hong Kong’s affluent FIT, and their inclusion / display likely beneficial to exhibitors to facilitate visitors planning (96%) and/or booking (32%) holidays. Also worth consider conducting seminar as 32% visitors interested. Exhibitors can sell direct to travelers only in the two public days, but are advised to check related laws.
Tapping Regional Travel Trade & MICE visitors in ITE Trade Days
Of the 12321 visitors in two trade days of ITE 2017, over 28% are from outside Hong Kong with majority from China, and overall 54% from travel agents and 18% from MICE respectively. In addition, number of unique visitors to ITE’s trade website in each month of 2017 range from over 18000 to over 40000! In fact, they can register online for admission in trade days and for attending trade seminars etc.
In addition to meeting buyers and trade visitors at stands, there are a number of free / optional services to further help exhibitors. They include business matching for quick dating between sellers and buyers; exhibit promotions in pre-show e-newsletters; posting press release in trade website; and assistance to hold trade seminars including online pre-registration etc.
ITE Hong Kong 2018
The upcoming ITE, which comprises of the 32nd ITE (leisure) and 13th ITE MICE, will be held from June 14 to 17 at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre.
