Jamaica to serve UNWTO for two years

unJamaica will be serving a two-year term after being elected by the executive council of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation alongside Argentina and Uruguay.

 

The shared arrangement of the four-year membership will allow the three designated seats for the UNWTO’s Commission of America.

 

Jamaica is a member of it and it will be served by more members of the region. Beginning from 2019 , the second half of the four year term will be served by Honduras, Peru and Brazil.

 

 

Edmund Bartlett expressed his pride and said that Jamaica has internationally occupied a unique position to reap benefits garnering a positive impact on the people of Jamaica. A number of key partnership, strengthen linkages and an increase in investments have been made.

 

The main duty of the executive council is to manage and implement strategic decisions carried out by the UNWTO.

 

The tourism dependent countries will be able to work together for the development of the region.

 

Jennifer Griffith, permanent secretary in the ministry of tourism said that Jamaica stands in solidarity with other countries, the negotiation within the Commission of the Americas will provide an amicable solution allowing more countries to take part in the global decision making body. He was happy to receive the support from the fellow states in the Americas.
