Jammu and Kashmir received the highest footfall of tourists since the ending of the British rule in India, said the trade and industries minister Piyush Goyal. This latest news comes as a helping hand to the Narendra Modi led Central Government’s resolution to scrap the special privileges of the state in 2019.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government hyped the tourist numbers as a mark of important economic growth in the Valley.

Piyush Goyal said that Kashmir is gradually becoming energetic. He said that 16.2 million tourists visited the Valley since January, and it is the highest number in the last 75 years. He added that the government’s transformative measures and reforms for upholding Jammu and Kashmir have given a major boost to tourism.

Well-known for its snow-capped Himalayan mountains, swift rivers, gardens of Mughal-era, Alpine meadows and houseboats around the picturesque Dal Lake, the federal territory witnessed renaissance in domestic tourism since the ending of most of the COVID-19 restrictions this year. Although Goyal did not mention the exact numbers, the majority of visitors in Kashmir are domestic tourists. Foreign tourists require a special pass for visiting the majority of Jammu and Kashmir.

The record number of tourist arrivals has proved to be a blessing for the Modi government. Accompanied by horticulture and agriculture, tourism is a noteworthy industry for Kashmir, accounting for about 7% to its economy.
