Japan is evaluating its border control strategy of keeping day-to-day entries under 50,000 and will remove it in the near future.

The Japan government will relax other restrictions at the same time including requirement of a visa and the obligation to travel on a package tour when the country fully dismisses the daily restraint on foreign arrivals. This was said by the Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Seiji Kihara.

Japan’s stringent COVID-19 border measures have been gradually alleviated; however, they are in place for more than two years. Of late, the daily entry limit was increased to 50,000 from 20,000 and inbound tourists were permitted to travel without being accompanied by a guide.

Kihara said that Japan has seasonal charms during fall and winter. There are a lot of people out of the country who want to visit Japan. He added that Japan should not stay behind in luring foreign tourists, especially at a time when the country’s currency’s weakness is making ita desirable destination.

The entry limit had been increased in stages since March to touch 20,000 in June. However, all foreign tourists in Japan would still need to get visas and wear face masks during their journey.

In 2021, only 245,900 foreign visitors entered Japan, which is the lowest number in recent times, dealing a huge blow to the country’s travel industry that was supported by inbound tourists demand prior to the pandemic.
