As the world learns to slowly return to life following new –normal norms, Japan’s government too decided to resume inbound tourism but only on limited basis from Spring. It is expected that Tokyo will be the first state to host delayed summer Olympics according to the Asahi newspaper report on Sunday.
Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga’s administration at present is leaned only on allowing small tour groups from Asian countries where coronavirus infections are well under control, such as China and Taiwan, the Asahi reported without citing sources. However, government officials from Japanese government were unavailable for comment.
Suga’s government further launched a subsidy programme so as to revive domestic tourism, a key driver of economic growth in recent years, but the scheme has been criticised because Japan is struggling with a third wave of coronavirus infections.
With the rise in new infection rates in Tokyo and Osaka, government is coming up with advanced plans. The number of serious cases nationwide has also risen to a record. Under the new normal rules all tourists should test negative for the coronavirus and submit a detailed travel itinerary before entering, according to Asahi. Tourists should also make use of a tracing app and give daily updates on their health, according to the report said.
Only a limited number of tourists will be now allowed to travel to Japan for business but are requested to self-isolate for 14 days. And the Tokyo Summer Olympics was scheduled for this year but was pushed back to 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
