Japan will permit non-guided package tours from all countries from September 7.

It will also more than double the number of people for entering daily dismissing some of the severest Covid-19 border rules among major economies.

The protocols set by Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, however, do not permit the entry of individual tourists.

The premier also didn’t mention changes concerning visa restrictions set for entering the country.

Kishida said that the everyday entry limit would be increased to 50,000 people from the current 20,000. He also said that they want to relax border controls to propel visits from people who are trying to gain from a weak yen.

Kishida’s government started permitting limited tourists into the country from June, conditional on stringent rules like being part of a package tour accompanied with a guide and wearing face masks.

Last year, Japan witnessed around 246,000 foreign visitors, which is a far cry from the record 31.9 million visitors in 2019.

Airlines, hotels and sellers in Japan are all enthusiastic to recover the business that they have lost.

Last year, the negligible amount of foreigners permissible into the country spent 120 billion yen. In 2019, they spent 4.8 trillion yen, or forty times more, said the Japan Tourism Agency.

Tourism-related stocks went up after Kishida’s statement, with airlines ANA Holdings Inc. concluding the morning session in Tokyo 2.9% more and Japan Airlines Co. going up 3.4%.
