Aiming the wealthy Asians, the government is all set to develop an environment in which not only visiting patients but also their family members can enjoy their stays in Japan.
The Japan Tourism Agency and the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry will together introduce the project in 2019 with the target of boosting regional economies, the sources said.
The number of inbound travelers who come to Japan for medical treatment or health examinations has been growing each year. The new project will focus on three countries from among China, Russia and Southeast Asian nations, where medical tourism to Japan has mainly achieved popularity in recent years. Travel packages will be brought together in collaboration with medical institutions, among others, in the target countries.
The government has designs for destinations outside big cities, as there are ample advanced medical institutions in the regional areas of Japan. By planning a detailed stay that will link visits to such medical facilities with neighboring tourist spots that are comparatively unfamiliar to foreigners, the government seeks to get foreign tourists interested in those areas.
For instance, one travel plan will offer that while a patient is staying at a hospital for rehabilitation, the patient and their family members will be able to visit a hot spring.
In another proposal, patients with an orthopedic problem like neuralgia or back pain can take therapeutic walks in the forest with their families when they are not under treatment.
Also, there is a plan for diabetic patients to enjoy Japanese cuisine with local ingredients while receiving dietetic advice.
