An increasing number of patients from Jammu and Kashmir are travelling to Amritsar for medical treatment which has given a boost to the city’s medical tourism. This has not only helped the medical industry thrive, but has also provided chances for businessmen to build infrastructure, cater to visitors, and discover new trading partners.
Dr. Avtar Singh, who receives patients from all across Jammu and Kashmir, says they (Kashmiris) prefer to come Amritsar around October and stay till the end of February owing to the valley’s near-freezing temperatures.
“Every year, the number of patients is increasing due to modern medical facilities here. The same are not available in the nearest cities from Srinagar like Jammu and Pathankot,” Times News Network quoted him as saying.
With the volume of Kashmiri patients travelling to Amritsar, Dr. Avtar and many other doctors are considering building hospitals in Srinagar. The bulk of Kashmiri patients come to Amritsar for orthopaedic and optical care.
Dr. Amandeep Kaur stated that patients from Jammu and Kashmir have established trust in physicians and the medical services given in Amritsar over the years.
With a surge in the number of Kashmiri patients, infrastructure in Amritsar has been developed to meet their demands, particularly halal cuisine.
Times News Network interviewed Abdul Hameed of Muslim Hotel who says that the number of Kashmiri patients arriving in Amritsar has multiplied several times in the past few years.
“Since they prefer halal food, the number of restaurants and hotels serving halal items has significantly increased,” he said, adding that despite being expensive, the medical facilities and treatment in Amritsar was better than that available in the valley. Hameed claims that the number of Muslim hotels catering to Kashmiris has expanded over the years.
