The Nilgiris is all prepared to organize yet another tourist attraction. A park with the name John Sullivan, the founder of the modern Nilgiris, is getting constructed at Kannerimukku village situated close to the Sullivan memorial. The Sullivan Park is being constructed at a cost of Rs. 20 lakh. On January 15th, 2021, it will be opened for the public, just before the 166th death anniversary of Sullivan.

Since Sullivan memorial is in the village, the government took the decision to set up the area as a park, as part of tourism development project.

To quote collector J Innocent Divya, “A sum of Rs.20 lakh has been sanctioned by the Special Area Development Authority (SADP) towards the development of the park.” She added, “Earth work of the project has been completed. Species of ‘shola’ tree saplings and ‘shola grasses’ find place in the park among others.”

Flower garden, natural species of the Nilgiris, children’s play area and a food court among many others will be the chief attractions of this park. The Kotagiri town panchayat will be overlooking the project. When it comes to development of a garden, the panchayat has asked for the help of the horticulture department.

To quote Shiva Subramaniam Samraj, joint director, horticulture department, “We are helping the Kotagiri town panchayat by providing flower saplings and expertise in planting the saplings to develop a garden in the Sullivan Park.”
