Kenya’s Jomo Kenyatta International Brought to a Standstill as Workers Protest Adani Group Agreement

Wednesday, September 11, 2024

Kenya’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport was the scene of a major protest on Wednesday, as hundreds of workers demonstrated against a proposed agreement between the government and India’s Adani Group. The controversial build-and-operate deal would see Adani take charge of renovating the airport, constructing a new terminal and runway, and managing the facility for the next 30 years. The protest resulted in significant disruptions, grounding flights and stranding passengers at one of Africa’s busiest airports.

Kenya Airways issued warnings about flight delays and possible cancellations due to the strike. The workers, who had initially postponed a strike last week in hopes of discussions with government officials, reignited their protests after reports surfaced of unfamiliar individuals accompanying airport authorities, sparking fears that preparations for the Adani deal were moving forward without proper consultation. This added to the workers’ growing concerns over the lack of transparency surrounding the agreement.

Earlier in the week, the Kenyan High Court temporarily halted the implementation of the deal following a legal challenge questioning its legality and transparency. The court’s decision has intensified public scrutiny and delayed the project until further review. The future of the airport’s modernization plan now hangs in the balance, with both sides awaiting the court’s final ruling.

The strike has amplified broader concerns about the balance between foreign investment and national interests. Many argue that while modernizing the airport is necessary for Kenya’s economic growth, the process must be handled transparently and ensure that the long-term benefits serve the country’s interests. As the case moves through the courts, there is a growing call for the government to reconsider the terms of the deal and to engage more inclusively with all stakeholders involved.
