A registered non-profit organisation, the Periyar Tourism Development Council, is all geared up for the development of Kodanad tourism, close to Perumbavoor. The council has requested the State government to allocate sufficient financial help to enhance the facilities of tourism like rest houses at Kodanad and Abhayaranyam region along with protected enclosures.

M.P. Prakash of the council explained that the Kodanad centre had the possibility to get transformed into an eminent tourism destination. Also, it had historical importance as the location was near the Periyar River. Here, during archaeological excavations, several sites had been unravelled.

For tourists coming from different countries of the world, Kodanad-Abhayaranyam and Kaprikkad appeared quite interesting with many visiting the areas after the restrictions related to COVID-19 were lifted. If sufficient funds were given by the State government, providing entertainment facilities for kids should be the prime goal, including a children’s park, stated Mr. Prakash. Also, constructing shelters from rain and protected enclosures could attract greater number of tourists to the area, he said.

From February 2021, around two lakh people have visited the Abhayaranyam ecotourism centre so far, said Mr. Prakash.

Kaprikkad is home to exotic and unusual butterflies along with migratory birds. It’s spread over 250 hectares of land. Elephant and deer can be seen most commonly. Of the forested area, Periyar flows on the northern side which is a key attraction for the adventure enthusiasts.
