Kerala inaugurates Kannur International Airport

On Sunday the Kannur International airport was inaugurated in Kerala , making the state the first in the country to have four international airports.

 

 

The inaugural flight was jointly flagged off by Civil Aviation Minister Suresh Parbhu and Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan that carried 186 passengers to Abu Dhabi, at the airport near Mattannur town.

 

 

Apart from Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, Kozikhode this will be the fourth international airport. Cultural traditions of Malabar and Kannur are depicted here along with Kodagu located in neighbouring Karnataka.

 

 

The heritage of Malabar and Indian dance forms are depicted in the mural paintings that includes Theyyaam of north Kerala, Kathakali and Yakshagana which is a traditional theatre art form of Karnataka.

 

 

The airport has a runway length of 3,050 meters and is spread over 2,330 acres and will be serving more than one million passengers.

 

 

 

The state and Central Public Sector Undertakings has a stake of 22.54 per cent while the Kerela government owns 32.86 per stake in KIAL.

 

 

 

It is expected that the airport will be a benchmark on how airports will be constructed in the country. The Kannur airport is built on a public-private partnership (PPP) mode.

 

 

 

There will be six aero bridges which is expected to increase in the future, the airport will also have a 24 check-in counters which can go upto 48 hours as per the requirement.
