Being optimistic about the improving tourist footfalls, Kerala Tourism is aiming more on domestic travelers and considering “responsible or sustainable tourism” in the state for increasing tourism growth.
Kerala Tourism information officer Sajeesh N said that the state tourism department is now focusing on domestic tourists, which amounted to 1.33 crore people during January-September this year, from 45 lakh during the same period in 2021.

The ascent in tourism activities started increasing after subsiding of the Delta wave and normalcy returning in August last year and gathering speed this year. Sajeesh N said that Kerala is expecting the last three months of this year to witness a good increase in domestic travelers in Kerala.

He added that for luring domestic tourists, Kerala is looking forward to promote the winter holiday season in a big way. Several programmes have been planned like festivals, caravan stays, houseboats, Ayurveda-based wellness solutions and adventure activities among others.

To make the tourism sector comprehensive and create income, the Kerala government has asked the panchayats in the state to come up with one tourism product or offering that will assist in the livelihood of local people and villages.

Responsible and sustainable tourism are also being encouraged for promotion, where people can go back to basics with minimalistic living amid nature. The government is providing training to locals for improving their livelihood.
