Now, health-conscious travellers looking for a “leisure-cum-fitness trip” will be able to workout against the magnificent backgrounds of God’s Own Country while on vacation. In collaboration with the Tourism department, the Sports and Youth Affairs department has agreed to put up “open gyms” in tourist destinations in Kerala.

In an interview to the Hindu, Prem Krishnan S., Director, Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, said that because more tourists are looking for healthier activities even while on vacation, the State government has decided to set up open gyms at select tourist locations under the Tourism department in the first phase of the project. The project will be expanded based on the response, he added.

The government has allocated Rs. 20 lakh for each gym. The Directorate will first install outdoor workout equipments at seven specified locations after buying them through open bidding. The Tourism department will be in charge of equipment maintenance.

According to Mr. Krishnan, the workout equipments would be in the “general category,” which means it will be suitable for individuals of all ages.

In the first phase, open gyms will be built at Muzhappilangad beach, which was named one of the top six best driving beaches in the world, Beypore beach and Sarovaram in Kannur, Kottakunnu/Tanur in Malappuram, Fort Kochi/Marine Drive, Raja Kesavadas swimming pool near the Alappuzha Lighthouse, and the scenic Kanakakunnu Palace grounds in Thiruvananthapuram. Other tourism attractions will be added to the project in the future.

Kerala is already a forerunner in the country’s wellness tourism market, and promoting fitness during travels is part of the Healthy Kerala programme.

“We hope it will become a trend among tourists in Kerala during vacations,” The Hindu quoted a senior Tourism department officer as saying.

The State government also intends to hire members of the Kerala Voluntary Youth Action Force, which is part of the Kerala State Youth Welfare Board, as tourist guides across the state.
