The Mobile-Based Integrated QR Code Ticketing System is becoming increasingly popular in Kolkata, transforming how commuters navigate the city’s metro system. Since its launch, approximately 321,000 passengers have embraced this innovative mode of ticketing across various metro corridors up to October 26, 2024. The system allows riders to generate tickets directly on their mobile devices, facilitating a smoother, more convenient commuting experience. Data shows that this modern approach is steadily gaining traction, indicating that Kolkata’s metro commuters are shifting toward digital alternatives to streamline their journeys.

The popularity of this QR-based ticketing system has surged since its inception, with usage rates experiencing impressive growth over the months. In April 2024, around 6,616 commuters chose this method, but by September, that number had escalated to 59,362—a remarkable 897% increase. Up to late October, approximately 220,201 passengers used mobile QR tickets, showcasing a growth of 3,328% compared to April. This surge reflects commuters’ preference for the efficiency and ease provided by digital tickets, which eliminate the need for paper and reduce the hassle associated with traditional ticketing methods.

With the Mobile QR Code Ticketing System, passengers can now access any metro station on interconnected corridors using a single mobile-generated ticket, making transit more flexible and adaptable. The ability to purchase these tickets from anywhere, be it at home, in the office, or on the move, further enhances convenience. Commuters avoid standing in long queues at ticket counters, saving time and streamlining the process. This system’s design caters to the evolving needs of a modern, mobile-friendly commuting audience who value speed and ease.

The paperless QR ticket not only brings convenience but also supports Kolkata’s sustainability goals. These tickets, valid for up to 12 hours within a single day, eliminate the need for physical tokens or tickets, significantly reducing paper waste. The environmental benefits are underscored by the metro system’s commitment to minimizing its ecological footprint, as it shifts toward more sustainable operations. With the Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) gates now upgraded to accept mobile QR codes, Kolkata’s metro system is paving the way for an eco-friendlier future.

This progressive shift toward mobile QR-based ticketing highlights a transformation within Kolkata’s public transport network. It provides a glimpse into a digital future, where smart, sustainable solutions are seamlessly integrated into daily life. By reducing physical ticket requirements and offering a quick, efficient alternative, Kolkata Metro’s QR ticketing initiative exemplifies a forward-thinking approach that resonates with the city’s growing tech-savvy commuter base.
