Lately, Kushimoto town tourist association has proudly declared its most sought-after attractions.

Even though several cultural and geographic highlights of Japan’s Honshu Island are famous, if you inquire about the southernmost point of the island to any person who is aware, they’d most probably get stumped. A township called Kushimoto in Wakayama prefecture would be the right answer to this question. Besides being a beach paradise with loads of fascinating and unusual rock formations, Kushimoto has a countless attractions and historical hot spots. The area holds some interesting international history, much of which makes it particularly welcoming to travelers outside Japan.

“People here have a known history of more than 1,000 years of welcoming foreigners. There are even legends that messengers came from Chinese emperors looking for medicine from plants to give eternal life,” he relates. He adds people in Kushimoto “have had a long relationship with people outside of this seashore.” – Naoya Sakamoto

The Kushimoto area can approximately divided into three areas, Kushimoto town, Cape Shionnomisaki, and Oshima Island. The latter one is a quaint isle that runs parallel to the Cape Shionnomisaki beach line of the mainland. All of these areas have numerous dramatic rock formations. These are caused by volcanic eruptions millions of years back. The Yoshino-Kumano National Park highlights these spectacular rock structures. One inspiring instance that can be given here is the Ichimai Iwa standing stone. It’s a 100-meter tall megalith and is Japan’s largest above ground monolith. It’s a wonderful sight. It’s just one of the natural wonders in the national park. These include the Umikongo rock formations and Odaigahara and Osugidani gorges. The amazing geological creations are found on the coast of Kushimoto. Right off the shores of the main beach park in the town are the Hashigui standing rocks.
