International Certification and Growing Connectivity

Nigeria’s dedication to synchronising with the global sphere in aviation has earned the country its first-ever international certification for the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA). It has come to the attention of the international aviation community that the MMIA has all the requisite safety and operational certificates and has, therefore, qualified as an entry point for considerable international air traffic. Because of the international certification, the MMIA is expected to accommodate increased operational air traffic as West African and Nigerian tourism and air travel grow.

MMIA operational improvements will further enable Nigeria’s ambition to become an international business and tourism travel destination. Enhanced air connectivity in the MMIA will facilitate international airlines to increase the frequency of their flight offerings to major tourist market destinations like Europe, the USA, and several African countries. Enhanced connectivity will open up Nigeria’s major tourist destinations as well as several countries in West Africa, increasing international tourist traffic expected via Nigeria.

Dealing with Operational Challenges and Improving the Tourism Assets of the Region

There have been great improvements with the facilities of the airports, however, there still remains operational issues, most notably, abandoned and disused airplanes parked airside, taking up precious real estate. These ‘graveyards’ are not only eyesores, but they operationalize the airport even less efficiently. FAAN has requested the removal of such aircraft to operationalize the airports better; to operationalize the airports better, airlines are able to have less turnaround.

The removal of these airplanes and operationalising the airports better, will positively also affect all the airlines and all ground handlers. International buyers will also see the operational airports as an attractive place, as the flow of pax will be better and the ditching of operational delays will also be better. As such, a better flow of operational airports will benefit the tourism sector as greater frequency of flights will also be there with minimal delays; ultimately, a reliable service is offered to the tourists.

Cohesive Action to Enhance the Impact of Tourism

An additional benefit of the renovations taking place at the airport is FAAN’s pledged focus on improving stakeholder coordination. Coordination will be improved through the establishment of regular meetings between collaborators in the field of aviation, private sector players, and the justice sector, where challenges will be resolved and beneficial practices promulgated through the disparate parts of the sector. This will help ensure benefit accretion to tourists and activate a more robust and functional tourism industry in the country.

Given the continued growth of the Nigerian aviation sector, the resultant MMIA upgrades will significantly bolster the tourism sector of the country on both the regional and global scale. The country’s increasing tourism demands justify the establishment of new and diverse tourism ventures predicated upon the airport’s remaining improvements.

Optimistic Investments in the Future of Nigeria’s Tourism

The current range of construction activities at MMIA supports Nigeria’s developmental objectives in air transport and tourism. These activities will strengthen Nigeria’s efforts to develop a global attraction, ideally transforming Lagos into the principal West African tourism hub. The activities will enhance the flow of passengers, boost construction, and provide largely new business opportunities on the tourism value chain through new connections.

Nigeria’s airports are aiming to improve international connectivity to emerging international markets. Other airports within Nigeria and other regions within Africa will most likely replicate and follow MMIA’s pioneering developments. This will likely have a positive impact on tourism and business travel in the region and beyond.

Conclusion

Murtala Muhammed International Airport’s most recent changes will allow Nigeria to enhance its tourism appeal on a larger scale within the West Africa region. The developed partnerships among the airport’s stakeholders will allow for increased international and regional traffic in Nigeria which reflects the many positive developments the country is going through. Net improvements will be seen to the Nigeria’s airport infrastructure, boost the country’s standing as an emerging tourism destination and enable greater travel activity within the tourism sector.
