For a long time, water hyacinths in Lake Toba has caused in North Sumatra, as these weeds are invasive by nature, polluting the area.

Lake Toba is anticipated to be managed well as a priority tourist destination, for which environmental problems like the one being caused by water hyacinths should be resolved as fast as possible.

Even though, it is not a huge troublemaker, many have used this plant as derivative products in terms of handicrafts, sold at a high price. Important innovations are key to make sure that Lake Toba can be built, keeping quality and sustainability in mind. The Coordinating Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Investment has teamed up with the players of the private sector to work jointly in utilizing and process Lake Toba’s water hyacinth. To build a water hyacinth processing facility, the two parties will work as a team that would generate plant extracted liquid and solid fertilizers.

In future, it’s expected that this business will create a constructive effect in regard to lessening the water hyacinth growth rate that was at first considered as weed, polluting Lake Toba. The plants will go through various methods to turn them into fertilizer products. Then these products are expected to realize the requirements of the local farmers in Toba and the neighboring areas.

Kosmas Harefa, the assistant deputy for sustainable tourism development, explained that his management team had continued to work together and take adequate steps in making Lake Toba a good-quality destination for sustainable tourism.
