Lakshadweep locals dismayed with government reforms

With an array of coral ringlets, each surrounding its own turquoise lagoon within the Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep is truly alluring! These 36 islands, together totaling just 32 square kilometers of land, comprise a matrilineal, mostly Muslim society where families earn their livelihood through seafaring and coconut harvests.

In the past fortnight, Lakshadweep, just 70,000 people among 1.4bn, has come to demonstrate a sort of controversy that is becoming persistent. The national government of Narendra Modi and his Hindu-first Bharatiya Janata Party is making use of little-tested executive muscles to push through a package of reforms for the far-off islands. These would open up the archipelago for further development, especially concerning tourism. However, locals in the islands are disappointed with these reforms.
