With Laos’s tourism sector reviving slowly, the Lao government is hopeful that the recommencement of China’s outbound group tours will work as a powerful boost to the tourism industry of this Southeast Asian country.
In the first three months of 2023, Laos has experienced an explosion in tourism as over 831,000 tourists from abroad came to the country. This was in stark difference to the 211,898 visitors from overseas in the first six months of last year.
The Lao Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism, compiled the statistics and shows that 344,405 visitors had come from Thailand among the total arrivals and almost 180,000 had come from Vietnam. Next came China with around 143,312 and 45,756 from South Korea.
In the meantime, the government of Laos and private sectors has been getting ready for the influx of huge Chinese tourist numbers after Laos was scheduled by the Chinese government – greenlit, for outbound group tours.
At a meeting on preparations in terms of Chinese tourists, while expressing thoughts, the Deputy Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism, Lao, Ounthuang Khaophan, which was organized on May 26 th , stated that when it comes to great revenue, the Chinese tourism market is a major source.
Due to this, several countries have started promoting schemes to draw Chinese tourists.
An enormous increase to the growth of this market is the China-Laos Railway. This helps quick and suitable travel between Laos and China.
