Yesterday, all the well-known private sector stakeholders of tourism together urged the government once again to alter the leadership at the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority.
The request to bring in fresh leadership comes after several requests made to the Ministry of Tourism to look into the condition of the visibly struggling tourism industry in a proactive manner.
To the media yesterday, the Hotels Association of Sri Lanka (THASL), Sri Lanka Association of Inbound Tour Operators (SLAITO) and the Travel Agents Association of Sri Lanka and Association of Small & Medium Enterprises in Tourism, issued a joint statement on the urgent alteration at the SLTDA.
To President of Sri Lanka, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the stakeholders have appealed on the need for a capable chief to manage and control the SLTDA so that the problems related to tourism are being actively looked into and in consultation with the private sector, effective solutions are made.
“The gross mismanagement of the industry’s affairs during these challenging times has led to a downward trend in tourism depriving Sri Lanka of the much needed foreign exchange,” the stakeholders alleged in the joint statement.
Also, the statement emphasized that the biggest land bank of Sri Lanka, which lies with SLTDA, has been distributed randomly. This has made court cases like a contempt of court against the Chairperson, Director General and the Directors of SLTDA, they said.
