LGBTQ law in Florida makes travel “dangerous”: Groups warn

The two advocacy groups, Equality Florida and the Florida Immigrant Coalition, have issued travel advisories warning against travel to Florida, citing the state’s anti-LGBTQ laws, restrictions on reproductive health care, repeal of gun safety laws, and racial prejudice.

The Florida Immigrant Coalition specifically warned of “unconstitutional laws which abuse civil liberties,” including the potential for harassment, detainment, and family separation based on racial profiling. The advisories highlight legislation such as the “Don’t Say Gay” law that restricts teachings about sexual orientation and gender identity, bans on care for transgender minors, and a bill that allows people to carry concealed guns without permits.

These warnings come in response to what Equality Florida calls “assaults on medical and academic freedoms” and “censorship and erasure” of the LGBTQ community and attacks on immigrants. The groups report negative effects such as parents considering relocation, prospective students avoiding local colleges and universities, and business groups canceling events and conferences.

Governor Ron DeSantis’ office has dismissed the warnings as “political stunts.” However, the advisories urge individuals and families traveling to Florida to create a safety plan, including consulting with an attorney prior to travel and memorizing a civil liberties attorney’s phone number.

These travel advisories highlight the importance of being aware of a destination’s laws and potential risks before travel. Travellers should consider the safety and well-being of themselves and their families when deciding on a travel destination.
