Only a limited number of tourists are visiting Japan after two months since the government declared that it would reopen its boundaries which were closed for foreign travelers for two years as part of pandemic constraints.

Japan, South Korea and Hong Kong’s firmness on sustaining the coronavirus restrictions like quarantine and testing made them a global outlier and reduced their tourism retrieval.

Brendan Sobie, a travel industry analyst said that there is a glaring contrast currently with few parts of Asia compared to the rest of the world. Tourism in south-east and south Asia has recuperated faster, since countries in these regions have already dismissed pandemic restraints.

Even though Japan reopened its borders in June, it has struggled to get foreign visitors with strict travel rules that involve visitors to be accompanied by a guide – right from their entry till leaving the country.

The reopening also coincided with Japan’s biggest coronavirus outbreak since the onset of the pandemic, which was driven by the greatly communicable BA.5 Omicron sub-variant.

Daily Covid cases in Japan dropped below the 200,000 mark this week after going up to 250,000 infections for the first time last week. Notwithstanding a striking decline in the yen, only 120,400 visitors came to Japan in June, which is lesser compared to May and April when borders remained closed. Among them, only 252 were tourists. In 2019, 32mn tourists visited Japan.
