The President of the Republic of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, earlier this month has declared about the changes to the National Executive that would give more power to the capacity of the government and effectively bring on its mandate. Lindiwe Sisulu took on her new role as the new Minister of Tourism as part of these alterations as the previous Minister, Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane, heads the Ministry of Human Settlements.

With huge experience in bureaucracy, Lindiwe Sisulu will bring to the role her rich skill set and strategic expertise, even as South Africa firms plan up for international tourism recovery. For the South African economy, tourism is the backbone, contributing 6.9 per cent of the national GDP in 2019 and followed by 1.5 million jobs. As the country immensely aimed on promoting intercontinental and domestic travel in recent times, simplifying border restrictions has brought back the appetite as well as confidence of foreign travelers, encouraging South African Tourism to initiate their global travel recovery plans once again. As far as India is concerned, it’s one of the top markets that the tourism board is investing in as they carry out their plans, given that India was the 8th largest international source market for South Africa before the pandemic.

Lindiwe had worked as the Member of Parliament since 1994, and was also the Minister of Human Settlements, Water and Sanitation from May 30, 2019 to August 5, 2021. She helmed the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation portfolio from February 27, 2018 to May 25, 2019 before that. She has been the Minister of Public Service and Administration and the Deputy Minister of Home Affairs, Minister of Intelligence, Housing and Defense as well.
