Local municipalities of Lock Haven, Pennsylvania have decided to close down playgrounds and limit city park activities in order to keep children and families safe amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Joel Long, Mayor, Lock Haven announced last week that certain areas of city parks will remain closed to the public. The skate park, basketball court, tennis court and baseball field at Hoberman Park and the Shade baseball field have already been closed down. Parks throughout the city have also stopped keeping playground equipment at parks open.

Mayor Long said in a press statement that the parks themselves are not closed and the open areas continue to be open. He informed that parks have not been shut down but certain areas of the park have been closed. He mentioned that the decision was made because of reports stating people gathering at courts and not following social distancing rules in playground areas. He mentioned that authorities decided to close them until notified further to help follow the social distancing rules.

He further explained that the coronavirus can travel by touching things and hence playground equipment is marked off from the public because sanitizing the pieces is difficult. He said that kids often slide on the slides or climb up things and it is impossible to count the number and sanitize after every slide. He added that disobeying the closures and forced entry would be considered trespassing.

The spaces at the parks will be closed until Governor Tom Wolf lifts the stay at home order around the region.
