IndiGo, India’s largest airline, is intensifying its efforts to capture a more substantial share of the long-haul traffic market by expanding its footprint in Europe. As part of its aggressive international growth strategy, IndiGo has applied for daily flight slots at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS) for direct flights from its hubs in Mumbai (BOM) and Delhi (DEL), slated for the summer travel season.

Strengthening Management and Enhancing Sales Operations

To support this ambitious move, IndiGo is reinforcing its management team, particularly within its sales and cargo departments. In an effort to establish a more robust European presence, the airline has appointed experienced leaders to key positions. Mark Sutch, the former Chief Commercial Officer (Cargo), has been promoted to oversee IndiGo’s international expansion, retaining his responsibilities in cargo operations. Additionally, Liesbeth Oudkerk, who previously worked with Qatar Airways, has been appointed as the Regional Head for Europe.

To further bolster its operations in Europe, IndiGo is actively recruiting managers for critical locations, including London, Paris, and Amsterdam, to support its growing international network.

Fleet Expansion and Strategic Adjustments for Long-Haul Routes

IndiGo’s strategy to enter the European market is accompanied by significant adjustments to its fleet. Currently, only 28% of IndiGo’s capacity is dedicated to international routes, but the airline intends to ramp up its long-haul services as it expands into Europe.

To accommodate the new routes, IndiGo will receive Airbus A321XLR aircraft later this year, which are more fuel-efficient and capable of operating longer routes. Additionally, the airline is set to incorporate Airbus A350s into its fleet starting in 2027. To bridge the gap in the short term, IndiGo plans to wet lease six Boeing 787 aircraft from Norse Atlantic Airways, with the first two jets expected to arrive by March 2025. These aircraft will initially be deployed on routes to Bangkok (BKK) or Singapore (SIN), before being used for European flights.

Facing Competition and Seizing Opportunities

IndiGo’s entry into the highly competitive India-Europe market places it in direct competition with established giants such as Air India, Emirates, and Etihad Airways. The most popular destinations for Indian travelers to Europe include London, Paris, Frankfurt, and Amsterdam, and IndiGo aims to position itself as a key player on these routes.

Currently, IndiGo holds around 6% of the European market share. The airline already operates flights to a few European cities, including Baku, Istanbul, and Tbilisi, and has a codeshare agreement with Turkish Airlines. This partnership enables IndiGo to offer its passengers access to over 30 additional European destinations, extending its reach across the continent.

As part of its future strategy, IndiGo is also expected to deepen its ties with major European carriers like Air France-KLM and Virgin Atlantic. These partnerships could help IndiGo secure crucial airport slots and enhance its passenger and cargo flow between India and Europe. IndiGo’s existing commercial ties with Air France-KLM already provide its customers with access to 30 destinations in India.

Navigating Regulatory Challenges and Exploring Alternatives

However, IndiGo’s European expansion faces several operational and regulatory challenges. The Dutch government has proposed reductions in flight operations at Amsterdam Schiphol, which could complicate the airline’s efforts to secure permanent slots. IndiGo is currently in discussions with local authorities to find a solution that will enable it to operate efficiently in the region.

If Amsterdam proves difficult for IndiGo, the airline is considering alternative European destinations. Despite these challenges, IndiGo remains committed to pursuing its European ambitions and is likely to continue leveraging strategic partnerships and operational adjustments to meet its growth goals.

With its expanded fleet and strengthened management team, IndiGo is poised to become a more significant player in the competitive European market, bringing affordable long-haul travel options to passengers between India and Europe.
