Los Cabos is taking beach tourism to the next level in 2025 by unveiling seventeen new Platinum-certified beaches, a move that sets a new standard for eco-friendly travel and beach safety. This prestigious certification ensures that these beaches adhere to the highest environmental and safety protocols, including pristine water quality, regular clean-ups, and enhanced safety measures with fully trained lifeguards. Visitors can now enjoy not only the beauty of Los Cabos’ coastlines but also an eco-conscious and secure experience. With these new certifications, Los Cabos strengthens its commitment to sustainability, environmental education, and providing a safe haven for beachgoers, making it a model for responsible beach tourism globally.
What Does “Platinum” Beach Status Mean?
Platinum-certified beaches are the VIP sections of Mexico’s coastline, awarded by the Instituto Mexicano de Normalización y Certificación (IMNC). These beaches must meet rigorous standards for water quality, cleanliness, safety, and environmental education. In practical terms, it means you’ll enjoy sparkling water, pristine sand, designated swim areas, clean restrooms and showers, and helpful staff offering tips on local wildlife and conservation efforts.

Los Cabos already boasts 22 Blue Flag beaches—another internationally recognized eco-certification. The local beach teams, numbering nearly 200, ensure the region’s coastlines remain immaculate. By late summer, new Blue Flags will be raised at El Médano, La Playa in San José del Cabo, and the North Zone.
Then, come October, Zofemat will award 17 additional Platinum badges along the coastline, enhancing staff, infrastructure, and signage to meet the IMNC’s high standards.

Emphasizing Safety
While Cabo’s beaches are beloved for their natural beauty, some beaches can be dangerous due to strong swells, particularly in areas like Santa María, where lifeguards recently rescued multiple swimmers in a single afternoon.
Currently, lifeguards patrol the beaches from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., supported by hotel rescue teams and local fire departments. With Platinum status, expect to see more trained lifeguards, upgraded safety equipment, and clearer signage, offering you peace of mind while enjoying the ocean.
A Certified Beach for Every Taste
Los Cabos’ beaches are increasingly becoming eco-certified, whether with Blue Flag, Playa Platino, or another environmental certification. This means that nearly every beach in the region offers an exceptional experience, from pristine facilities to clean waters and eco-conscious services.
No matter which beach you choose, you’ll encounter well-maintained facilities, clear water, and a dedicated team working hard behind the scenes to make your beach day as relaxing and enjoyable as possible.
