For the eighth year in succession, Madeira has received the World Travel Award as the best island destination in Europe.

In the World Travel Award, a total of 11 other archipelagos/ islands were voting, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

The award has been considered as a remarkable achievement by the Regional Secretary for Tourism and Culture of Madeira, Eduardo Jesus.

“The number of times Madeira has won this award contributes to giving more consistency to the recognition that the region has achieved worldwide in recent years,” the Regional Secretary pointed out in this regard.

According to him, the award should fill all persons who work in tourism in the region with pride, and residents who see their land being praised internationally as well as thousands of passengers who value their holiday destination even more.

“We have reasons to be also pleased by how the destination reacted to the pandemic,” Eduardo Jesus stressed.
Despite being considered the best destination in Europe, Madeira’s travel and tourism industry has also been highly affected by the Coronaviurs’ spread.

However, recently the government stressed that it would help the travel and tourism sector get out of the crises provoked by the virus. According to the government, the increase in salaries will occur, above all, in tourism and commerce sectors, adding that “the recovery of the economy must be felt by all.”

The Azores were also in the running for the World Travel Awards for the best destination in Europe, together with other islands in other territories, as reported by the Herald News.

The World Travel Awards created in 1993, is considered the most prestigious awards program in sectors of the tourism and travel, as well as hospitality industries.

SchengenVisaInfo.com reported that at the 28th World Travel Awards, Zurich Airport in Switzerland was named as Europe’s best airport for the 18th year in succession.

Besides Switzerland’s Zurich airport, other airports such as Florianópolis and Vitória were also ranked in top positions.
Furthermore, the World Travel Awards also considered THE LOFT at Brussels Airport the ‘Europe’s Leading Airline Lounge 2021’.
