Madeira has been declared the Best Island Destination in Europe at the World Travel Awards for the eighth year in a row. The Regional Secretary for Tourism and Culture of Madeira, Eduardo Jesus considered the award as a remarkable achievement for the destination.
The tourism secretary said in a statement that the number of times Madeira has won the award contributes to giving more consistency to the recognition that the region has achieved worldwide in recent years. As per Mr. Eduardo, the award should fill all people who work in tourism in the region with pride.
He mentioned that it is also a proud moment for residents who see their land being praised internationally as well as thousands of passengers who value their holiday destination even more. He said that the authorities have reasons to be also pleased by how the destination reacted to the pandemic.
Despite being considered the best destination in Europe, Madeira’s travel and tourism industry has been harshly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, recently the government mentioned that it would help the travel and tourism sector get out of the crises provoked by the virus. According to the government, the increase in salaries will occur, in tourism and commerce sectors, adding as the recovery of the economy must be felt by all.
The Azores were also in the running for the World Travel Awards for the best destination in Europe, together with other islands in other territories, as reported by the Herald News. Established in 1993, the World Travel Awards is considered the most prestigious awards program in sectors of the tourism and travel, as well as hospitality industries.
