The Madurai Travel Club is preparing a report on lesser known tourist spots in southern districts taking help of tourism stake holders. The report would be submitted to the state and central governments, urging them to develop and promote those tourist spots, with the gradual declining of the second wave of the pandemic.
Office-bearers of the club are depending on domestic tourism since international tourism will take more time to resume due to the ongoing restrictions. They said that Madurai is witnessing a good share of tourists, but it is not fetching revenue since tourists are spending less time in the city. For them, Madurai means only Meenakshi Amman Temple, Thirumalai Nayak Palace and Gandhi Museum. They leave for places like Ramanathapuram, Kodaikanal and Kanyakumari after visiting the well-known tourist spots.
Madurai Travel Club president G Raveendran said that all stakeholders in the southern districts have been asked to prepare the report. Many unknown places have been listed out. Some of the places were personally visited by teams for genuine inputs. “In Madurai alone, there are many historical sites which need attention. For instance, Jain caves in Madurai are thousands of years old and are a treasure trove. Most of the people coming from north India do not know about such sites. People from places such as Rajasthan particularly would be greatly interested about the historical sites,” Mr. Raveendran said.
The falls like Suruli in Theni and Courtallam in Tenkasi, unspoiled beaches in Tuticorin and Ramanathapuram and hill stations like Meghamalai and Sirumalai in Theni and Dindigul districts need to be prominently placed among national tourist spots.
