Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has asked the state tourism department to develop Mahabaleshwar into an important tourist destination. The hill station in the lap of Western Ghats is an enchanting travel destination, but it deserves a lot more attention from tourists.
The Chief Minister has also asked the tourism department to develop the Venna Lake and to increase the height of the Venna dam. The water storage capacity of the Venna dam, which supplies water to Mahabaleshwar, needs to be increased.
The CM said that Mahabaleshwar would be developed into an adventure, nature, religious, heritage and agricultural tourism spot. The scope of tourism in this spot needs to be expanded, and the department of tourism has been directed to complete this work on priority basis.
With thick forests and a misty air, Mahabaleshwar stands out in all its glory. Mahabaleshwar has some interesting places of interest for tourists like Venna Lake, Kate’s Point, Wilson’s Point and Elephant’s Point. Even though Mahabaleshwar is a popular destination among visitors, its prospective has not been expanded and explored fully. Mahabaleshwar used to be the summer capital of the Bombay Presidency during the British rule.
The distance of Mahabaleshwar is about 5 hours and 30 minutes from the city of Mumbai, and is a perfect getaway from the humidity of the city. You can take a bus from the city, or drive all the way up. The Pune International Airport is closest to Mahabaleshwar at 120 kms.
