For reorganizing the progress of tourism policies across Maharashtra, the state tourism department will employ the deputy collector as the District Tourism Officer, as an alternative to additional district collectors.
This move is meant to decrease the pressure of work for additional district collectors and aid in improving tourist destinations in Maharashtra. The officers will take care of executing the Maharashtra Tourism Policy 2016 at the district level, observe the growth of all tourism projects in their authority, make sure that Maharashtra gets the necessary go-aheads for planned development assignments of the Tourism department, match up with the state government and the tourism department for consents, and supervise application and spending for all plans of the department.
The Maharashtra government is also considering engaging third party contractors in 10 districts, i.e. Sindhudurg, Solapur, Ratnagiri, Chandrapur, Kolhapur, Osmanabad, Nanded, Jalgaon, Gondiya and Buldhana for helping district tourism officers in restructuring work. The contractors in these 10 districts will report to the Tourism department office.
As per a senior official, this is for driving actual growth of tourist destinations. The decision to employ additional district collectors in 2021 meant that they were weighed down with extra work.
