As major engineering work takes place in Edinburgh, rail passengers are being warned to expect disruption and Network Rail was renewing four sets of points and replacing 250m of track at Haymarket East junction to the west of the station.

The junction is one of the Scotland’s busiest and will affect many services as it is used by up to 30 trains an hour . Through Haymarket no trains will be able to pass and replacement buses will operate into Waverley from the west and no trains will be able to pass.

On all routes from 10:00 on Sunday, the normal services will be resumed and the upgrade is aimed at improving the reliability of the track and requires several days of work.

To minimise  disruption it has been scheduled for the holiday period and there are no ScotRail services into Edinburgh on Christmas Day or Boxing Day.

As the work continues into Friday and Saturday ScotRail has urged the customers to make alternative arrangements.

Before reaching Edinburgh many services will terminate and there will be only limited transport available. At the ScotRail website the details of the affected services is available.

Liam Sumpter, Network Rail Scotland route director mentioned that the Haymarket East junction is a key part of Scotland’s Railway and is used by hundreds of trains a day travelling to destinations across Scotland and England.

They understand the inconvenience this work will cause to some passengers, but renewing such a complex piece of  railway cannot be accomplished without a short-term closure of the line.

The project has been carefully planned by the engineers and will be completed as quickly as possible. They were working hard along with the train operators to keep the passengers updated about the changes.

On Christmas Day and Boxing Day efforts were made to improve with engineers renewing 300m of track at Shields Road.
