Flight MH122 was carrying 224 passengers.
It had to be diverted to Alice Springs after one of the engines of the jet started making disturbing sounds, as per the latest reports of regional news agencies. One of the passengers told the media that all of a sudden his wife grew alarmed when she heard a banging sound.
She stated that she was inside the loo when she started hearing banging noises from the right-hand side of the airplane.
The passengers said that the pilot therefore had to make a ‘brace-for-impact’ call.
But thereafter it managed to land the A330-300 safely though it had only one working engine. The pilot had landed on one engine and one of them was broken completely as per one of the other passengers named Mohamad Nogheib.
In a statement Malaysia Airlines mentioned on Thursday that flight MH122 had been diverted on account of ‘technical reasons’.
He then went on to add that the A330-300 aircraft had landed safely in Alice Springs Airport around 5.48 p.m. according to the airline.
MH122 had departed Sydney Airport at 1.06 p.m. and was expected to arrive in Kuala Lumpur around 6.30 p.m. the same day, said the airline. Hotels have been arranged for passengers in Alice Springs while replacement flights are being organized.
