The Penang government in Malaysia is looking into offering a 50 per cent discount for the promotion to domestic tourists after the COVID-19 or coronavirus situation improves. In a question and answer template for the State Legislative Assembly uploaded in Google Drive, State Tourism, Arts, Culture and Heritage Committee chairman Yeoh Soon Hin said that the effort was to boost local tourism as part of the Tourism Recovery Action Plan.
Association of Tourism Attractions Penang (ATAP) said that they support the “Penang Lang 50% Off” to boost domestic tourism.
For long term efforts, promotional and marketing campaigns will be held to recover the domestic and international tourism.
He was responding to questions by Joseph Ng Soon Siang (Air Itam-PH) and Ong Ah Teong (Batu Lanchang-PH) on the state government’s effort to overcome the problem resulting from the Covid-19 outbreak. He also said that the state government had taken steps to assist the affected parties with financial relief.
A RM500 one-off payment was given to small traders and licensed hawkers, RM500 incentive to trishaw riders and taxi drivers, RM300 for e-hailing drivers amongst others that was announced previously by the state government.
Penang Hill Corporation (PHC) also has exempted commercial lots and booth rents for one month and will consider further discounts for the outlets operating at both Lower and Upper Stations.
