Local tourism players are hopeful that the tourism industry will recover as the country remains cautious following the surge of the Omicron variant.

Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said the ministry would continue to formulate the best methods to revive the industry while supporting efforts carried out by the country in managing the current surge of Covid-19 cases.

“We have been informed of the Omicron variant characteristics, and that it is slightly less dangerous than the Delta variant.

“We have also been informed on what needs to be done if we contracted the virus, such as getting ourselves tested, updating the MySejahtera profile or so.

“Looking at the current situation, MOTAC has no other way but to remain resilient, in regards to organising physical activities such as the National Craft Day 2022 celebration, under strict SOP such as not allowing children under 12 to enter the venue except those fully vaccinated,” she said.

Nancy said this after officiating the National Craft Day 2022 programme at Kuala Lumpur Craft Complex, here on Friday.

Stressing on the importance of adhering strictly to the standard operating procedure (SOP), she said the ministry engaged closely with the National Security Council (NSC) and Health Ministry in drafting the SOP in finding the best methods for the industry to move forward safely.

“For hoteliers for example, there have been calls by customers saying that they have contracted Covid-19 and that they weren’t able to come on their booking date.

“The hotels will then assist the customers to change the dates of their bookings so that they will not forfeit their bookings. These are the measures that are necessary so that the industry can survive while ensuring people’s safety.
“InsyaAllah, when the Prime Minister announces the reopening of our international borders, we can move towards normalcy again. We just need to be patient,” she said.
