From an airport security tray at Rome Fiumicino Airport a man was found stealing €8,000.  The CCTV footage showed that both the passengers were passing through the metal detector and dropped off their belongings in the plastic tray.

After coming through the scanner the man was watching the cash in two envelopes going  ahead before he picked it up while the owner went on searching for it unaware that a fellow traveller took it.

Further, the airport security staff went ahead to help him search for the money which according to the police will be needed for medical care.

The police stated that the thief took advantage of the moment of distraction of the other passenger and after that the man stashed the stolen money inside the airport bathroom so that he could pick up while returning.

After being identified by the CCTV the thief was arrested by the border police and was tracked down when he was set for boarding a flight to Russia and the money was returned to the passenger.

The UK’s Airport Operators Association mentioned that although valuables are sometimes left for several minutes in airport security trays, episodes of theft at airport security at UK airports are “extremely rare”.
