This passenger, named Martin Pavelka is a 32-year-old man who was shocked to discover that his flight meal comprised just a single banana. The other passengers, on the other hand enjoyed a complete English breakfast with bread and yoghurt. Pavelka said that he was a celiac and therefore might have been offered the banana.
And, the banana had been served with salt and pepper, a knife and fork. Also, a sticker announcing that it was gluten-free was added to the fruit.
Pavelka was travelling on the second leg of his London-Sydney trip. He told the media that although the banana is indeed a gluten-free meal, it did not actually keep him full for very long.
Now, anybody who orders a ‘special’ airline meal irrespective of the fact if it is vegetarian, halal or gluten-free, what is actually served on the plate is likely to vary depending on the airline and also the airport where the meal was prepared. At times, it might be far better than the traditional mass-produced meals. At other times, it might be worse.
Pavelka stated that the choice of his meal left him ‘literally speechless’.
Passengers were offered a first meal a short while after the take-off. The banana was a part of the second meal service. But then, Pavelka initially felt that it was truly a joke of the airliner.
Even the flight attendant apologized to Pavelka.
The passenger also mentioned that it might have been the fault of the management. He had complained to ANA but is yet to receive a response. One of the journalists, John Walton, who writes about airline passenger experience for a certain aviation news outlet feels that serving banana as a meal on a nine hour flight is simply unacceptable.
