The start of flights from Manchester to Mumbai, with four frequencies a week is set to launch on November 5 by Jet Airways.
The Indian carrier is expected to claim market leadership between the UK and Mumbai, India’s commercial capital and centre of Bollywood industry with the new routes.
The airline is scheduled to fly on Monday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. It will offer254 seats on a two-class Airbus A330-200, including 18 in the airline’s Premiere cabin.
The flights will depart Manchester at 09.35, arriving in Mumbai at 00.40. and the inbound service will leave at 02.30, arriving at 07.55.
Three times a week Jet Airways already flies to Mumbai from Heathrow. It will offer onward connections to 44 domestic routes as its hubs and include international routes including Bangkok and Hong Kong.
Around 500,000 people dwell in the north west of India and an estimated 130,000 people travelling between Manchester and Mumbai travel indirectly.
A Manchester airport spokesperson mentioned that they anticipated the impact of this service will be similar to that seen with the launch of the Manchester-Beijing route nearly two years ago.
It saw a visitor economy spend of around £140m a year in the north, a 265% increase in export values and a doubling of inward investment inquiries.
The current expansion in excess of 7% per annum in India has made it the fastest growing economy overtaking China. In terms of purchasing power India stands as the world’s third significant economy.
