Massive vehicle crash reported on Texas interstate due to ice conditions

At least six people have been killed and nearly 65 injured on a massive crash involving 75-130 vehicles on Texas interstate due to the icy road condition. The accident has taken place amid a winter storm that is dropping freezing rain, sleet and snow on various parts of the U.S. The scene of the crash at Interstate 35 near Fort Worth saw entangled semitrailers, cars and trucks crashed into each other with some vehicles on top of others. The highway was closed down as emergency crews cleared the roads following the accident caused by the ice and low temperatures spread across Texas and Richardson.

First responders took about 30 people to hospitals after the crash, with some highly injured from the accident. According to emergency officials, farther south, in Austin, more than two dozen vehicles were involved in a pileup on an icy road, and one person was injured. Ice storm warnings were also issued from Arkansas to Kentucky, while another winter storm was predicted to bring snow to Mid-Atlantic States, as per the National Weather Service.

On Thursday, more than 125,000 homes and businesses were without electricity, largely in Kentucky and West Virginia, according to reports. Meanwhile, officials in central Kentucky were also urging people to stay home due to icy conditions. Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said state offices would be closed due to the weather.

He also declared a state of emergency, which he said would free up funding and help agencies coordinate as they respond to reports of slick roads and downed power lines. Crews were responding to numerous calls of downed icy tree limbs and power lines, and Lexington police took to social media to urge people not to travel unless absolutely necessary.
