May Day vacation worked as a ‘tonic’ to perk up China’s local tourism

At the start of the May Day holiday, the day trippers and sightseeing tourists from China were out in force on Saturday as the country keeps on working on its economic recovery from the massive pandemic. In Wuhan, Hubei Daily reported that by train, around 1 million people took a trip and more than 1 million vehicles were seen on the roads, creating severe congestion on many highways.

More than 1.1 million people visited the Beijing’s tourist attractions, a rise of 56 per cent from the same day in 2021, Beijing Daily reported.

In Hunan province, the story was the same where 1.35 million visitors descended on 105 tourist attractions. This was an up of 170 per cent from 2020, spending almost 21.9 million yuan, an up of 167 per cent from 2020, according to a Hunan Daily report.

The top two attractions of the province, Yuelu Mountain and Orange Isle, received their maximum capacities, as per the figures from booking systems.

The major rise continued in Guangdong province, where on Saturday, almost 2.1 million people visited 150 tourist attractions. This was an increase of 11 per cent on the same day in 2020, the official Nanfang Daily reported.

In Sichuan province, more than 1 million people visited 716 attractions. This generated almost35.4 million yuan in revenue, representing annual rise of 162 and 178 per cent respectively.

People across China on Saturday made over 56 million trips, a 111 per cent rise from 2020, as per the official figures. By air, almost 1.9 million trips were made and 36 million on the roads, the transport ministry said.

However, not all the trips ended on a positive note. Police in Fushun, Liaoning province, mentioned that three people lost their lives when the car they were in was crushed by a truck that overturned.

In many countries world over, May Day, or Labour Day, is a public holiday. As Chinese people are still not permitted to travel international due to the coronavirus, the five-day break is set to be a boost up for local economies that have been hard hit by the health crisis.
