MIAThe Meetings Industry Association (MIA) hosted its very first Destinations Summit on 5th and 6th February that was conducted at the Old Ship Hotel that is based in Brighton.

It was organized by Destinations Group of MIA by Paul Szomoru who is the chairman of this group.

The venue was NewcastleGateshead Conventions Bureau. This two-day event witnessed representatives from 20 UK destinations conglomerating to discuss how to lure more international events and operate successful convention bureaus.

After an opening address from Tony Rogers who had offered an overview of the fundamentals of running a successful convention bureau, the conference split into two streams for marcoms and business development.

Attendees of the marcoms stream had heard from Kirsteen Scott from Discover Britain and Ireland.

They discussed about how to win international business and also the strengths and challenges of marketing UK destinations. Key takeaways from the session included the value of networking both in the UK and overseas.

Also, it stressed on how important it is to work with and support one’s partners and how sector strengths can play a crucial role in making businesses successful.

This was followed by a session on exhibition excellence with Richard Allchild from IMEX Group and Jack Marczewski from The Meetings Show who shared their top tips for getting the most out of attending, and also turning it into a remarkable marketing opportunity by collaborating closely with the show teams, being strategic in stand positioning and thinking about the ROI they wish to achieve ahead of the event.
