More passengers passed through Melbourne Airport on an average day in August 2022 than in the entire month of August 2021, as demand for travel continues to rebound.

A total of 2,315,210 travellers used the airport’s four terminals last month, including 546,774 international passengers.

A daily average of 74,684 people used the airport in August, which is more than the 73,805 travellers recorded across the entire month of August 2021.

August also marked the opening of a new link between Terminals 3 and 4 which has removed some of the airport’s biggest passenger bottlenecks by consolidating security screening for Virgin Australia, Jetstar and Rex passengers at an enlarged and enhanced checkpoint.

Melbourne Airport CEO Lorie Argus said the airport is now gearing up for the September school holidays and next week’s AFL Grand Final.

“Between now and the start of October, we’re expecting around 1.5 million passengers to pass through our terminals as people head off for a break or come to Melbourne to watch the footy finals,” she said.

“The recent work the airlines have been doing to improve their operational performance is starting to show in their on-time data, and our team is doing what we can to support them.

“The airport will be busy, so we’d encourage passengers to allow plenty of time to help take pressure off themselves and the system.”

Significant construction activity to enhance the passenger experience continues across the airport precinct, with works on stage 1 of the elevated roads project and the Terminal 1 upgrade now well underway.

Melbourne Airport continues to plan for a second north-south runway, which it hopes to open by the end of the decade.
