Melbourne Airport welcomed record 37.4 million passengers for financial year 2018-19. It marked a increase by 2 per cent over the previous year. More than 11.4 million international passengers travelled through the airport. The top five nationalities were China/Hong Kong, New Zealand, India, United Kingdom and the United States.

Overseas visitors helped drive a 5.3 per cent rise in international passengers at Australia’s second-biggest airport compared to 2017-18.  This rise helped to offset soft domestic passenger growth of 0.4 per cent.

Over the 12 months, Melbourne Airport welcomed two new carriers – Cebu Pacific and Air Vanuatu – bringing the total number of carriers to 36. The local passport holders heading overseas through Melbourne rose by 5.9 per cent in 2018-19. They expect to see growth diversify into markets such as India, Canada and the Philippines.

Lyell Strambi, Melbourne Airport chief executive said that the growth in the international market is phenomenal. It rose by more than five percent compared to the previous financial year. It demonstrates the popularity in overseas travel and strength in Melbourne as a tourism destination.

Expanding the international network of the airport was a priority. It had been planning since 2013 to build a new east-west runway but said it was now looking at a north-south runway that would less susceptible to delays due to wind. Their review provides strong evidence to suggest that the north-south parallel could now provide a superior outcome in terms of availability, capacity, long-term investment profile and community impacts.
